Solo - A True Gentleman

If you're really lucky, once in your life, you get to share the life of a special canine companion. Not just any dog, but "THE" dog, that "soul mate", "love-at-first-sight", "love that lasts forever" sort of a dog.

That special relationship goes deep, in a parent-child sort of way; it's a love that's unconditional, but both ways, not just from the dog's side.
Know what I mean? If you do, then you've been lucky too.

I've had dogs all my life, lots of dogs. Mostly English Setters, but then, I've been breeding them for over 30 years. They're all individual, all special in their own ways.

But this is the story of the One.

Complex problems and an incompetent veterinary surgeon meant that all of Kizzie's first and only litter were born dead. Then, as I looked sadly at the dead pups, I suddenly knew, without knowing why, that the little dog puppy could be saved. I rubbed him with a towel, dipped him in warm, then cold water and cleared the gunk from his airways (the less said about that the better - let's just say it doesn't taste nice...) and he finally gave a little cough and started to squirm. I think that was when I fell in love, all those years ago, on the day he was born, 14th February - Valentines Day.

Kizz had to be spayed and was in no fit state to look after him so, for the next few weeks, I hand reared him and carried him around in a little sling inside my pullover. He was the only survivor, so I named him Solo and, on his KC registration, "Dewsett Man of the Moment".

From the day he was born to the day he died, we were together, every single day. I never went on a holiday without him, and never went on a trip without him. He kept me sane through my bad times and shared my good times. He knew what I was thinking before I'd even said it and kept the others in line with just a glance, never needing a bark or growl. Even when "my boy" aged, he did so with dignity and remained the boss - not because he was bigger, or stronger, but because he had earned the right.

But love has a price, and I paid in full on that dreadful day he passed away. I rejoice that we had the opportunity to share our lives together and I smile, in that bittersweet way, when I recall his ways; the consummate clown when I was sad; the staunch and loyal protector who, more than once, put his own body between a threat and me; the gentle companion who sat by my side and watched the sea for hours, or a sunset, or a starry night.

It was a privilege to know him and not a day goes by when he is not in my thoughts, touching my life even now.

This is my tribute to him, cast in Architectural quality Bronze resin from my original clay sculpture, in a limited world-wide edition of just 10 hand made castings.
